Father’s Day Pt 1 – SS17 Pt. XXII

June 9, 2017

Dads are great. With their big day coming up soon, and gifts being so tricky, we just want to help put a smile on Dad’s face. No matter what the father in your life’s style is, we have a kit for them.

For the classic dresser, we pieced together a look that uses classic silhouettes with an eye for craftsmanship. Under the guidance of designer Hiroshi Awai, Creep has become one our staples here at Uncle Otis. The Shida Button down shirt is a fun option for the summer with an all over print. We paired it with the Universal Works Tapered pant, which is a reimagination of the formal pant we’ve become all the familiar with. It is cut with a more room in the thigh before slightly narrowing from the knee to the ankle. This relaxed fit in a lightweight material is great for getting style points while staying comfortable.

The blucher moccasin was popularized in the 1950’s and 60’s for it’s versatility across a wide variety of occasions. The Yuketen version of this shoe is handmade in Maine courtesy of a rigorous 7 step process. The makers take extra care to produce a sole that molds to the wearers foot over time, ensuring they’re just going to get more comfortable.

Every one needs some tools for the day-to-day. For the classic dressing guy, the Filson medium duffle is a go anywhere-do-anything companion. The Seattle based outerwear company has been making products with integrity since 1897. Their timeless design philosophy makes this bag a great idea for Dad.

When he’s on the road, the Tanner Goods Travel Wallet is the stylish organizer everyone needs. It has slots for a passport, notebook, foreign currency, everything you need.

Not to overlook the more subtle details of Dad’s life, the Tanner Goods Memori pen is a writing utensil with purpose. It’s Machine fabricated in Portland Oregon with longevity in mind. It can be refilled with a wide variety of ink cartridges, so it can be enjoyed for years to come.4 (1)

For the weekend escaper, the city just won’t cut it when Friday hits. They’re more concerned with what’s happening outside the city limits than the hip spots in town. They are never far from their camera, to steal some quieter moments.

If the dad in your life sounds like this, look no further than this kit. The Universal Works Eaton Shirt is a really easy piece to layer on. It uses a soft cotton and subtle details to become more than your average white tee. A two button placket, long hem in the back and cuffed sleeves tie it together cleanly. A good looking tee pairs with anything quite easily, and for this look we thought the Eastlogue Military Vest and Creep’s Paratrooper short. The vest uses heavy military inspiration, as its name would suggest. This means a durable cotton and nylon blend that will stand up to the outdoors, if that’s were Dad decides to bring it. It’s adjustable via two side cinches for the desired fit. The front pocket options are awesome for extra camera lenses, smartphones or anything else that’s needed on a hike.

5 (1)To accent the military look, the Paratrooper short comes in clutch. They have a left side cargo short, right thigh patch pocket and two rear button flap pockets add room for anything else that needs to carried. The ripstop cotton used makes sure that life in the bush will be a breeze as long Dad chooses these to be his companion.

On foot, the Malibu Canyon concentrates on comfort and letting the breeze keep Dad cool. They use   an anatomically correct ultra-soft footbed that is hard to beat. Malibu uses cruelty-free materials, meaning the “leather” patches that the nylon five-strap weave into do not take from our furry friends. This also makes them more water resistant than if they used real leather.

The Techne Harriet watch in all black is a highly versatile, pilot inspired timepiece that uses Japanese quartz movement. It uses bold, contrasting face details to make sure it can easily be glanced at and understood. The ballistic nylon strap is based on a design used by the GB Ministry of Defence.

In order to pack up and get to wherever Dad wants to go, he’s going to need a good bag. The F/CE no seam 2/way trolley is an option that’s hard to beat. Part of the Dry Line from F/CE it uses highly durable glues to attach panels together making it completely waterproof. If it can’t be rolled to its location, no fear, it can be easily thrown onto you back using the hideable backpack straps.

Does Dad seem like a king of comfort? Then this wings + horns, Monitaly look might be more his speed.

Wings + horns has made their name creating timeless pieces that use their comfortable custom fabrics. The 1×1 Slub Henley is no different. It has all the detailing that gives a wings + horns piece its individuality. Flat lock stitching, underarm gussets, and gunmetal military buttons make this tee very easy to wear.

The Monitaly Utility shorts draw inspiration from vintage Air Force pants, with a clean, purposeful design. They use patch pockets all over, and side cinches force adjustability. The MVP of these shorts and most Monitaly pieces is their exclusive Vancloth & Sons fabric. It’s made exclusively for the brand and is a 100% water-repellant cotton poplin that has to be felt to be believed.

To guard against the sun’s rays, a good pair of sunnies is always a good idea. Garrett Leight’s design principles are easy to get along with, that’s why we think Dad will like the Warren 46. It’s a timeless look that modernizes a vintage shape.

A good pocket knife goes a long way for tiny tasks throughout the day. The James Brand Folsom knife is one that shouldn’t be overlooked for daily life. This minimalist knife brand packed small nuanced details into their blades to take them over the top. A reversible clip, tip up carry orientation, and grip handle are just some of the reasons why this is such a great knife.

Techne watches carry a light price tag for what they bring to the table. Clean, utilitarian designs that can be worn with a suit or a t-shirt in combination with a highly visible face makes them hard to pass on. The Merlin watch is a great example of this. Brushed Surgical grade stainless steel and double curved mineral crystal on top of a Japanese quartz movement.’

Simple accessories are a must for a comfort king. The Malibu x Missoni Latigo sandal can help in this department. A closed-toe sneaker style silhouette that makes life easy with an anatomically correct EVA foam, and PU suede footbed. As mentioned, Malibu is cruelty free meaning this is a manmade, microfibre leather weave upper. Up top the Norse Projects Light Twill cap is an effortless summer lid for whatever the day throws at Dad.

If Day trips are in the cards for Dad, the F/CE No Seam Day pack should be up there on the list of needs. Another piece of the Dry line, it’s fully waterproof thanks to completely seamless design. It uses a highly durable CORDURA ripstop nylon all over, and ergonomic straps to keep Dad’s back in good shape.
